UTI provides services in the areas of technology transfer and commercialization, linking the University of Calgary’s fundamental and applied research engine with commercialization partners. The first step in the process is to put the technology, innovation, idea or invention into a form where it can be transferred to another party. UTI has over 15 years of experience understanding the needs of the commercialization partner and helping the commercialization partner navigate through the complexity of a university. UTI works with the inventor to characterize the technology in a way so that it is easily understood and valued by industry and more importantly, so that the best deal for all parties can be structured.

To create the link between innovation and industry, UTI provides a full range of technology commercialization services. Our process provides a seamless and highly effective strategy where industry needs are matched with university research strengths. UTI client services include:

• Invention Assessments - Over 100 inventions are evaluated annually by UTI. Technologies are screened for technical feasibility and commercial potential before being accepted into UTI's portfolio.


• Intellectual Property Protection - The value of intellectual property is protected and increased through UTI’s active patent, copyright, and trademark registration program.


• Executive in Residence - The UTI Executive in Residence (EIR) program is designed to help support our company creation activities. Executives in Residence are brought on with funding support to coach and mentor researchers through the process of company creation. In most cases the EIR will act as Managing Director or President for the start ups to develop fundable opportunities. • IGNITE: Creating New Technology Companies - The IGNITE team creates and nurtures new companies based on innovation from both university researchers and innovators from the local community.


• Post Agreement Management - Our skilled project managers provide on-going, post-agreement management and administration of intellectual property transactions including monitoring agreements, payments etc.
