Return to the Community
UTI is committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and client engagement. We are part of the University's promise to provide a meaningful return to the community by taking innovation from the lab bench through to industry. Our Corporate Social Responsibility initiative embodies our commitment to conducting business in a manner that is fiscally, environmentally, and socially responsible.
Through our beliefs and the following CSR activities, we strive to make a positive difference in the communities where we work and live.
- Return to the U of C -
One of the pillars of the University of Calgary's role is to provide a "return to the community". For the 2008/09 year, UTI distributed: over $2.8 million to individual inventors and $11,567 to faculties. In addition, UTI offers three annual fellowships to post doctoral fellows at the U of C of $45,000 in total, to be shared equally between the faculties of Science, Engineering and Medicine.
In addition to these financial returns, UTI continues to educate researchers, clients and industry partners on the importance of commercialization and what role it plays in bringing important discoveries to market. We are also reaching out to industry partners and promoting the role of a research university in a sustainable innovation system.

- Student Technology Innovation Challenge (STIC)
The development and diversification of Alberta’s knowledge based economy is critical for the future health of our economy and our quality of life. Engaging post secondary students in the skills of technology entrepreneurship and business plan development is crucial for the development of our knowledge based economy. The Student Technology Innovation Challenge (STIC) represents an educational opportunity for all Calgary post-secondary students to learn the skills of technology entrepreneurship and provides an opportunity to apply those skills through a technology oriented student business plan competition. UTI has partnered with STIC since its first season in 2005/06.
In the 2008/09 competition, University of Calgary biomedical and geomatics engineering student Justin Waghray won STIC for Neurologic Medical Solutions and its development of a brain plug designed to reduce the procedural risk of chronic subdural hematoma drainage.
UTI is proud to sponsor this worthwhile initiative and is continuing our partnership in 2009/10.
