UTI has more than 20 years of experience assisting researchers and inventors in bringing their technologies to market and have assembled a team of technology commercialization experts who provide a full range of services including: consultation, advice and assistance on identifying, protecting, managing and commercializing intellectual property. UTI also advises and assists in developing financing, marketing, selling or licensing intellectual property and provides on-going, post-agreement management and administration of intellectual property transactions. UTI’s company creation incubator, IGNITE, starts up early stage ventures and is responsible for ongoing management of these ventures.
Through its operation and experienced team, UTI applies its knowledge of product development, strategy, marketing, license negotiation, intellectual property protection and customer service to bring about agreements between clients and customers and to ensure the smooth and effective integration of research technology into industry.
Position Description:
The Project Manager - Medical and Life Sciences (PM-M&LS), as a member of the Licensing and Business Development team, will facilitate the licensing and commercialization of primarily medical and life science-based technology. The PM – M&LS will manage a portfolio of existing technologies and will be responsible for working with clients to identify and evaluate new inventions for commercial potential, marketing to and initiating contacts with potential licensees, and negotiating and closing license agreements with industry partners. The PM – M&LS will also be responsible for developing intellectual property protection strategies for the technology portfolio under their management.
Key Accountabilities:
• Actively works to support UTI’s mandate of excellence in technology commercialization.
• Identify new inventions derived from research done at The University of Calgary.
• Perform assessments of patentability, market potential and overall commercial potential and make recommendations to the team as to how best to commercialize the technology.
• Meet with investigators/researchers as needed to evaluate and define strategy for commercialization of inventions;
• Develop marketing strategies and conduct market analysis for technologies in portfolio;
• Perform valuation of technologies in portfolio;
• Develop intellectual property protection strategies and manage ongoing prosecution of intellectual property in a timely and cost-effective manner;
• Identify and initiate contacts with potential licensees;
• Design and initiate licensing strategies for each technology in portfolio;
• Negotiate and close license and equity agreements with industry partners;
• Maintain and efficiently utilize all aspects of a technology and intellectual property project management database (INTEUM) for each technology in portfolio.
• Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Candidate Profile:
• Undergraduate, graduate or post-doctoral degree (strongly preferred) in the biological sciences, preferably in the fields of pharmaceutical/drug development or biotechnology/molecular biology, or relevant experience.
• Three to five years experience of working independently or managing intellectual property protection, commercialization and transfer of nascent biomedical technology to industry is strongly preferred. Education or experience in intellectual property law or business is a plus, as is experience in the development and/or commercialization of medical device technologies.
• Knowledge, skills and abilities to:
-Develop marketing and commercialization strategies for nascent medical and life science based technology
-Develop intellectual property strategies to maximize protection and potential value of the technology
-Establish relationships with, negotiate and close business deals with industry partners.
-Interact with business development or scientific offices in the corporate world
• Experience/track record in taking nascent technology to market
• Strong ability to work closely with others as a team player and be able to efficiently and effectively manage multiple projects with varying priorities
• Strong ability to work effectively towards consensus with a diverse group of decision-makers.
• Superior communication skills – both verbal and written.
